Souza, Roth Advance
Play for the opening day of the JSM Challenger is complete. In a day with no real surprises, two current Illini earned victories and will compete on day two of the JSM Challenger. Abe Souza (pictured) topped Adam Chervin in straight sets and will take on No. 6 seed, Richard Bloomfield. Teammate, Connor Roth also advanced and will face No. 8 seeded Treat Huey.
The final current Illini player in qualifying, Marek Czerwinski, fell in a thrilling three set match to Phillip Simmonds. Marek used his aggressive play to apply pressure and keep the match close but was able to convert only one of eight break points. Simmonds will face the No. 7 seed, Kaden Hensel in the second round.
Day one produced only one upset of a seeded player. Alex Musialek of France topped South African, Fritz Wolmarans, in straight sets and will face Brian Battistone in the second round. The only qualifying player not in action on day one was No. 1 seed Arnau Brugues-Davi. He plays Australian Adam Hubble in the second round.
