Day Two Complete, Qualifying Round Set - Doubles Draw Released
Play on day two of the JSM Challenger is fininshed. All seven seeded players in action advanced to keep their hopes of entering the main draw alive. Only two matches went to three sets. First, Australian Kaden Hensel topped Phillip Simmonds after dropping the first set. Secondly, Cecil Mamiit overcame a slow start to pull out his match against Bruno Agostinelli, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The two current Illini players in action, Connor Roth (pictured) and Abe Souza, were unable to advance to the qualifying round. Roth lost to former University of Virginia standout, Treat Huey, 6-4, 6-4. Richard Bloomfield defeated Souza in straight sets as well.
Sunday marked the beginning of qualifying doubles play. In the day's first doubles match, Trent Aaron and Craig Schwartz defeated Brandon Davis and Scott Denenberg in straight sets. In the other match, Souza and Roth teamed to battle Ashwin Kumar and Ryan Rowe. Kumar and Rowe took the match in straight sets. The winners will face off tomorrow for a place in the doubles main draw.
The JSM Challenger doubles main draw has been released. Rajeev Ram will team with David Martin and will be the No. 1 seeded duo. Ram is seeking his fourth doubles title in Champaign-Urbana. A pair of current Illini, Marek Czerwinski and Dennis Nevolo, have been awarded one of three wild card entries. Main draw doubles play begins Monday, November 16.
