Round One of Qualifying Complete

The first day of the 2007 JSM Challenger of Champaign-Urbana is complete with few surprises on the court. Seven of eight qualifying seeds advanced, with No. 4 seed Roman Borvanov being the only seeded play to fall.

Two current Illinois Tennis players advanced to round two: Ruben Gonzales and Abe Souza. Gonzales defeated teammate, Brandon Davis, in straight sets while Souza downed Devin Mullings. Both will be facing talented opponents on day two as Gonzales will face off against Phillip Simmonds and Souza battles Michael McClune.

Brian Baker (pictured), a wild card entry into qualifying, quickly dispatched of his opponent without dropping a game. He will face Marcus Sarstrand and continue his comeback from a serious injury that left him unalbe to compete for nearly two years. Last week in Nashville, Brian received a main draw wild card and won his first round match before falling to Robert Kendrick in the second round.

Second round qualifying matches will begin at the Atkins Tennis Center at 10:00 am. Doubles qualifying will begin following singles matches, not before 1:30 pm. Scores will be updated throughout the day.
