Current and Former Illini Earn Main Draw Wildcards

Illini sophomore, Dennis Nevolo, will make his second straight appearance in the JSM Challenger by virtue of a wild card. Last year, Nevolo faced former Illini Kevin Anderson. In the match, Nevolo learned what it takes to compete at the next level. Anderson took the match in straight set en route to the 2008 JSM Singles Title. This year, Nevolo looks to use the experience from last year to reach the second round and beyond. Dennis is waiting to learn who his first round opponent will be.

Former Illini, Ruben Gonzales (pictured), was granted the tournament's second wild card. Gonzales has been traveling around the world and competing in Futures tournaments. He is hoping to use his opportunity at this year's JSM Challenger to earn ranking points needed to graduate to the Challenger circuit. This will be Ruben's first appearance in the main draw of the JSM Challenger. He has competed in qualifying as a member of the Illini between 2005 and 2007.

Two additional wild card entries, selected by the USTA, have been awarded to Amdericans Blake Strode and Nicholas Monroe. Main Draw play at the JSM Challenger begins on Monday, November 16, 2009. The main draw will be released soon.

General admission is free through Wednesday, November 18. Come see top players from around the world showcase their skills at the Atkins Tennis Center. Visit www.illinoischallenger.com frequently for the latest scores, tournament news, and schedules.
